Robin moved to Australia from South Africa when he was 4 years old. He was introduced to kayaking in 1995 by Steve Pilton as part of the Canoeing for Kids program ran at Ascot Kayak Club. After showing initial promise in the flat water disciplines of sprint and marathon, Robin found his passion lay in the white water and in particular Canoe Slalom. He competed at his first national championships in 2000 when he was 12. In 2002 he toured Europe with the Australian Junior Slalom team in K1. After the highs of 2002, 2003 was not so kind, as he succumbed to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. For a year he wasn’t allowed to get his heart rate above 120 beats per minute. With no training leading into the 2004 National Championships Robin made the Australian Junior Development team in C1 and returned from New Zealand with 5 Gold medals.
Due to Western Australia’s lack of Whitewater, Robin was forced to move to Sydney to continue his training at the 2000 Sydney Olympic course. He has been a member of the Australian Under 23 team since 2006. In 2008, he competed as part of the senior Australian team at two World Cup races in Slovenia and Spain. Robin has also been involved in coaching junior West Australian and Australian slalom athletes at a National and International level.
