Geegelup Cup Wrap(Up)

Congratulations to all who competed in the State Downriver Championships this weekend.

The river conditions were the highest in recent years with the levels hovering about 2.5 and 2.4m for Saturday and Sunday respectively. These ideal conditions made for fast, but challenging conditions with most paddlers completing their runs without touching a single rock.

This year saw a resurgence in junior paddlers for a discipline that thrived in WA in the late 80s/early 90s, thanks to some collaboration between the Slalom and Wildwater technical committees and a number of generous paddlers who donated their unused DR craft.

The highlight for many was Saturday’s teams race where teams are composed of a number of different craft. I was fortunate to be teamed up with Sue Quick and developing Slalom (and now hopefully DR) paddler, Steven Lowther. We had a great run down the 7k section with no spills and an unreal ride.

Looking forward to next year and seeing even more paddlers on this fantastic stretch of water.
