Avon Descent

Northam to Bayswater - 133km

T
he Avon Descent is WA’s most notorious whitewater paddling event. On the first weekend of each August competitors travel to Northam from all over the world to take on the legendary race from Northam to Perth. Day 1 challenges paddlers over a 56km leg from Northam to Cobbler’s Pool, about 20km outside of Toodyay. Day 2 varies the challenge with a Ti Tree controlled warmup before the valley opens up to give paddlers a new exciting challenge, taking on the 40km valley stretch with a mix of grade 1 to 3 rapids depending on water level.
The final stretch, even though on flatwater, can be the most rewarding part of the race as you share your tales with fellow paddlers and realise your paddling goals on sighting the finishline at Riverside Gardens.

If you need help in training towards your Avon Descent goals, Precision Paddling Australia can help.

Mainpeak Paddlesports Bay 2 Beach
Mosman Bay to Cottesloe Beach - 17km

The Bay 2 Beach is one of Perth’s longest running paddle events. Each year between 200 and 300 hundred paddlers take to the water that holds challenges for both flatwater and surf paddlers alike. The race is also frequented by Outrigger clubs which adds another element to the atmosphere of the race.
The finish at Cottesloe Beach provides a fantastic culmination to this great annual race.

Classic Paddle
Narrows Bridge to Left Bank Hotel - 12km

The Classic Paddle signals that start of Perth’s summer season of paddle races. The race begins under the Narrows Bridge with the Old Swan Brewery to the right bordered by Kings Park above. The 12km race takes in some of Perth’s great river scenery, if you have time to look, with a portage over Pt Walter spit, before finishing in front of the Left Bank Hotel in East Fremantle.

Geegalup Cup
Bridgetown - 7km
The Geegalup Cup is one of the true classics on the WA calendar. The race has made a true revival in recent years as new paddlers are getting word of this fantastic weekend of paddling in Bridgetown.
The races are held on a great scenic course that runs 7km downriver from the bridge at Bridgetown.
Although the event is a Downriver race, it is also open to plastic craft. The weekend also includes the annual Wildwater dinner, one of the best events on the WA social calendar.

Paddle Challenge
Bayswater Circuit - 18km
The Paddle Challenge provides a great lead-up event for those training for the Avon Descent. The race was traditionally paddled from Bayswater to Middle Swan Bridge, with a short return to Sandalford Caversham Estate.
In 2007, the course was changed to a loop format taking in the waters of Ascot, Bayswater and Maylands.

Summer Dash
Pt Walter Circuit - approx. 12km
The Summer Dash has offered a couple of new course options since the race’s inception a few years back. In 2007, the course was changed to a curcuit centering around Pt Walter, which enabled supporters to keep an eye on the action from a relatively fixed viewpoint.
A great summer race.

Ocean Racing World Cup
